Assignment #7

Outside of English 110, i don’t think i will ever really use a weblog again. I may look at some and perhaps post a few comments for school, but i don’t have much use or interest in blogging. If there are any future projects in my life that have to do with writing or reading blogs, i definitely feel more confident in finding them and/or writing them than i did before this class. I think research projects, or any other projects for school are great examples in when i might need to read weblogs or write about my projects to get idea’s or feedback on them. Other than school related or work related, i will not be blogging for the fun of it.

Revised Op-ed

My analytical research project i just finished was about day care centers and how they effect children’s behavior and how they grow. With all of the different research that has been done on this, many parents are still torn. To be honest, all of this research and studies of children in child care hasn’t been much help. No matter what there is always a situation where some children develop better than others in day cares, and same thing goes for those who stay at home. There are a few pros and cons of sending a child to a day care, but that is just something parents have to risk and just hope for the best. Of coarse parents can also try to do the best they can to provide the best day care for their children and make sure they send them to the highest quality of them all, but one will never really know how it will effect their child until after they attend one.
Parents have more than academic performance and behavior to worry about in day cares as well. There are now studies showing that children gain too much weight in day cares because of less structured eating habits. There was a paper published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine that showed a study over a nine month period of time, children were gaining 0.4 lb. more in day cares than those who stayed at home. This can make some parents decision even harder on whether they should send their child to a day care or not. No parent wants their child to be unhealthy or increase their risk of childhood obesity. If prarents are really concerned about this, they can also make sure the child is involved in active activities, and if not they can make sure they get exercise on their time out side of the day care. Also the parents can pack the child a heathy lunch and snacks to make sure they aren’t eating fatty, unhealthy foods.
Some parents are better off sending their children to day cares because they simply don’t have time to teach and nurture them during the day. In this case the child will learn much more in the day care than they would at home. This is also a better way for the child to learn how to interact with other kids. This helps prepare kids for when they have to attend elementary school.
The main factor in this case is behavior problems, it was shown that most children have fewer behavioral problems if they stay at home. Also, it depends on the kid, but children can also grow out of this. If they have bad behavior and it’s treated right the child will most likely change once they mature a bit. It is important for children to learn at a young age because it will stick with them as they grow. A child left at home durring the day with a parent who doesn’t have time for them wont do anything good for them and will need more help once placed into an actual school.
There are all kinds of studies on good and bad outcomes of children who attend a day care. I feel that either way there is going to be some risk for the child, but life is about taking risks right? You never know what could happen or how a child can turn out unless one actually tries sending their child to day care. I personally don’t think there is any big deal on sending a child to day care and if the outcome isn’t what was expected then there are hopefully different options out there for that person’s child. No matter what, every child develops somewhat differently.

Reflection

My opinion on the op-ed has changed the most. I enjoyed that part of the project a lot more than i thought i would. I thought it was fun writing about something that we just got done researching, but got to write more freely on our topic and more of our opinions were involved. I’m still not too crazy about blogging. I’ve never really been that interested in writing for everyone to read and state their opinion on. I guess getting feed back on my research project was nice and it boosted my confidence on my paper. Other than that I probably wont ever blog again.

Rules of an Op-Ed.

There are a few rules that should be followed to make an effective op-ed.

1. logos. Make it logical

2. Pathos. Make sure there is some emotion to it.

3. Ethos. Try and make a good reputation, therefor a reader who likes the author better may believe them more and have a better opinion on the writing.

Also it is important to have a timely op-ed. People are interested in current events and issues.

In the op-ed that i recently read, it was timely because it was about an issue that is going on right now with many parents of twins. That made more people read it and have an opinion on it.

Assignment 4.

In the op-ed that i read about the separating twins, i thought the author did a good job in organizing the strategies. First she stated how there are many laws now being passed about how schools need to respect the parents of twins decision in separating them or not in schools. On the side it also showed in what states and the dates they became a law. The author also showed the perspective of different parents of twins that have been separated and their opinion. Another good strategy was that there were some facts and statistics on the issue. I think overall the author’s choices were effective.

Difference in writing for academic and popular audiences.

The difference in writing for an academic and popular audience is that the popular audience is more laid back. There aren’t many rules you have to worry about and you can speak your mind more. Normally in popular writings your writing for people who are more like yourself instead of professors that are grading you. Also anyone can read a blog that you write, and it can be a subject of your choice. I think the main difference is that writing for an academic audience is going to be more strict and you have to be more careful. Writing for a popular audience is pretty much free to be of anything of your choice.

Analytical Research Project

My analytical research project is on the effects day care centers have on children. I know many children have parents who work so they are sent to a day care center every day and i was curious to find out if this was a good or bad thing for children and how it effected their behavior and growth. There have been many studies on this topic and i found it pretty interesting to learn about. Some find that children learn a lot from being introduced to the social world so early and others find that children can behave more aggressively and act more angry. There are also children who have emotional problems that cause them to act the way they do at day care’s and schools. I found this site that has interesting points on this subject.

Separating Twins

I found this in this mornings USA today, i thought it was interesting and somewhat relevant to my research project. It makes a good point on how school’s should respect the parents decision on separating their twins in school.
